Another narrow defeat hard to take for Cambridge

AFTER a three point defeat last week, Cambridge House's 18-20 defeat at the hands of Grosvenor Grammar on Saturday was even harder to take.

Cambridge House again took a lead as last week, two penalties from Tim Small followed by a try from right wing Matthew Irvine, and with first half domination, led 11–0 at half time.

Things began to go awry in the first quarter of the second period through an amalgamation of belligerence from Grosvenor, a subsequent four replacements required for the home side and what Cambridge House perceived as questionable refereeing.

Grosvenor took advantage of the disarray to Cambridge's re-arranged formation and ran in two unconverted tries, then a penalty to lead 13–11 midway through the second half.

Cambridge House had begun to find their flow again when an intercept try was given away cheaply and they trailed 20-11.

To their credit they came back and the battered and bruised Mark Payne forced his way over the line and under the posts to bring the deficit to two points.

As last week, Rab Gregg's side sought the winning score but again came up just short. There were good performances from back row players Kris Steele and Jonny Spiers with Stuart Clyde showing well at second row.

The Second XV fixture between the two schools ended in a 12-12 draw.
