Another win for unbeatable Aiken as Banbridge CC riders dominate

Round One of the Ulster Cross Country League, held at Kilbroney last weekend, was dominated by Banbridge CC riders who claimed no less than four category wins and two second places in an event with over 200 riders competing.

Pride of place belonged to overall race winner Roger Aiken, seemingly unbeatable at the moment, who held a minute advantage over second placed rider and club-mate Gareth McKee (sponsored by Chain Reaction) at the finish. Gareth in turn had more than five minutes to spare over the next rider. It was yet another top class display from both riders.

Kathryn Aiken continued her fine run of form with a plucky second place in the Senior Ladies race behind a very strong Claire Oakley (Xmtb McConvey Cycles).

James Curry took another fine win in the Junior Male category with a series of lap times that many of the senior men would have envied. Equally capable on the road, James looks set to have a fine season ahead of him.

The Under 16 category produced another two winners for Banbridge CC with Cameron McIntyre coming home four minutes ahead of his nearest challenger in the boys race while an extremely competitive Shannon Buller had almost nine minutes in hand in the girls event.

While these riders took the plaudits in terms of results, the meeting attracted a total of 16 Banbridge CC competitors who all contributed to the success of this Dromara CC promotion through their endeavours across all categories. This builds a team spirit among the MTB members of the club. Nathan Sturrock damaged his machine in practice and couldn’t have raced had it not been for the loan of clubmate Billy Forsyth’s new Giant Anthem, a gesture typical of the club spirit.
