Armagh Ladies into final of zone event

ARMAGH Ladies are through to the final of the Inter-Zone Championship.

They had a comfortable 20 shot victory over neighbours West Down on Saturday in the semi-final.

They will now meet Donegal in the final on Saturday, February 11, at a venue to be arranged.

This is a repeat of last year’s final and promises to be an enthralling contest.

On mat one for Armagh Elizabeth Smyth, Eleanor Hunter, Linda Milligan and Rachel Cassells met a rink skipped by Evelyn Hobbs.

The Armagh four struggled to get started and were 5-0 behind after four ends.

Although they finished strongly West Down hung on to win 11-8.

Daphne Marshall, Anne Crozier, Ann Patterson and Hilary Agnew on two for Armagh met Lynn Martin’s four.

This Armagh rink put on a great display by winning eight of the ten ends for an 11-2 victory.

On mat three May Cassells, Michelle Wright, Marlene Hobson and Diane Agnew played Angela Canavan’s rink.

At the halfway stage May’s rink trailed 5-4 but then they moved up a gear and after counts of three, four, two and a single they won 14-7.

At the interval Armagh had a 13 shot lead.

On mat four for Armagh Catherine McMillen, Samantha Corrigan, Eileen McDonald and Irene Doone met Anna Polin’s four.

The Armagh rink were always in control and at six ends were 9-0 in the lead.

West Down managed to score a couple of singles in the eighth and ninth ends but Armagh went on to win 12-2.

Pauline Beattie, Sheelagh Garvey, Sophia Minish and Sadie White of five for Armagh played Bernie Conlon’s rink.

Armagh scored a single in the first end before West Down scored a brilliant five on the second end and a single in the third to lead 6-1.

Armagh however won the next five ens to go 9-6 ahead and although West Down got a single in the ninth end Armagh went on to win 11-7.

On mat six for Armagh Flo McNally, Agnes Crozier, Sandra Whittle and Lesley Strain played Sandra Dunn’s four.

West Down got off to a good start with a three in the first end and another three in the fourth to lead 6-4 at seven ends.

West Down finished strongly with another three and a two to win 11-4.

This Armagh win means they have now reached their fifth final since 2000.
