WITH five wins a piece it was always going to be a tight match and it proved to be just that when Strabane came to Armoy for a top of the table clash.

Armoy were the first to settle and after 10 minutes the ball went out wide for Casey to score an unconverted try in the corner after good work from the pack.

Big Stevie Bartlett was out injured from the pack and his driving surges up the middle were sorely missed .

However, G Christie, M Donald and N Porterfield all made their mark and with driving runs up the middle which gave a good supply of ball to the backs.

Too many penalties were conceded by the home team and with Strabane having a good kicker it was only a matter of time before he struck over a penalty to close the score to two points.

Some brilliant defending by the two teams kept the scores down and no more points were added before the interval.

The second half was much the same as the first with few good scoring chances.

With 15 minutes left of the match, Strabane struck with another penalty to put them one point in front and Armoy staring defeat in the face.

It was that man Jarvis Trainor who came to the rescue when the home team were awarded a penalty just inside the visitors’ half.

The crowd and players exploded as the ball sailed between the posts to give Armoy a slender two point lead which they were to hold on until the referee blew the whistle to great sighs of relief by the home team and supporters.

PRO Tom Christie said after the match that it had been a very good all-round performance by the keep which keeps them at the top of the league table with six wins out of six.

He said the win was especially pleasing as several key players were not playing, but that there was a good deal of strength and depth at the club.

Next Saturday the team travel to Donegal for a league match and as always a full turnout is expected at training in preparation for this tough away match.
