The men from Moyle stood tall in the face of a Strabane forward pack determined to knock them aside and, despite falling behind to two penalties, a mesmerizing try by out half Scott Moffatt gave Armoy a 7-6 victory.

“It was a fantastic result,” said Neil Porterfield. “It was a war of attrition up front, as it always is against Strabane, but we are so happy and proud to have made it into the Butler Shield final - especially for Tom Christie who has been with the club since it began and has scored a try in every season.

“The club has only been to one final before - the Harden Cup many, many years ago - so we are determined to bring back the silverware. Donaghadee are a bit of an unknown quantity but the rumour is that we will have a 52-seater bus going for supporters so that should help!”

And the good news continues to roll in for the club with mini-rugby starting at Lime Park and talk of a ladies’ team as well as further redevelopment of Armoy’s home stadium.

“The committee is now fully focussed on raising the profile of the club and pushing us forward,” Neil said. “Winning silverware would be a big step towards that goal.”
