Rugby

ARMOY played their last league match away to City of Derry on Saturday and after a close fought encounter came away with a 14-12 win.

Within a minute of the kick-off the home team scored a try wide-out after the Armoy defence failed to realise that the match had started.

With the conversion missed Armoy kicked off and settled down to a better style of rugby.

Line-outs were always going to be a problem as Derry had a second row player over seven foot tall.

Good work by the back row of S Bartlett, G Christie and B Taggart led to the ball being fed to Sammy McMullan who crashed over for a try from a succession of rucks and mauls in the opposition half.

P Kerr converted to leave that the only score of the first half.

Again from the kick-off Derry scored another try after some sloppy defence.

This time is was converted with a good kick from wide-out with the game going to and fro, the match was decided when a mistake allowed J Cassley to pick up a loose ball and sprint 30 metres to score below the posts to leave an easy conversion for P Kerr.

The home team tried hard for a score but Armoy held out and the final whistle went much to the relief of the Armoy team and their band of faithful followers.

Armoy finished the season in third place in the league and club captain said that this season’s results gives the club something to work on for next season. This Saturday night sees the club dinner in the clubrooms and a good night is expected.
