Athletes enjoy successful weekend

NINE Larne AC athletes made the trip to Ballymoney recently for the NFU Mutual five mile road race. Boasting a course with PB potential, this event attracted 150 competitors, including some of Northern Ireland’s top runners.

The honour of being Larne AC’s first finisher went to James Brown who ran an excellent race, finishing in 10th place with a time of 28:15. Next into view was Craig Hutchinson (11th place - 28:42), pushing hard right to the line and having his efforts rewarded with a 1st place finish in the Vet 50 category. Greg Lavery (19th place) cruised into the finish area, achieving a personal best time of 30:35, proving that his hard work in training is most definitely paying off.

Allan McCullough (35th place - 32:53) just beat good friend and training partner Drew Girvin (41st place - 33:38) who also achieved a personal best, before Evan Taylor (47th place), having just returned to the club after a break from running, crossed the finish line in 34:39. Kirsty Sharratt finished strongly, securing a 6th place finish in the female race with a time of 35:08.

Dan Magill (68th place) crossed the line in 36:00 and was the third Larne AC member to improve his personal best for five miles. Rhonda Brady, who ran 38:20 (16th female), completed a successful evening for Larne AC, with a 36 second personal best.

Nat Glenn, Davy Clarke and Paula McAllister competed in 5km Parkrun events in Belfast and Ballymena. Nat won the Waterworks, Parkrun in Belfast in a personal best of 16:42. In Ballymena, Davy won the ECOS Parkrun in 18:26 with Paula being the first female to finish in 21:41.

On Sunday, Geraldine Quigley and Ian Brennan travelled to Cookstown and joined 340 fellow runner enthusiasts for the Cookstown Half Marathon, an event included in the Championchip sponsored, Northern Ireland Half Marathon Series. Geraldine was first of the Larne AC duo home, finishing as 4th female in 1:36:01. Ian crossed the line in 1:39:42, securing a very credible 80th place overall (7th Vet 45).
