ATHLETICS: Hylands and Deller pick up prizes

East Coast Athletic Club members enjoyed another successful weekend, with runners picking up category prizes and personal bests at events in Northern Ireland and England.

On Saturday seven tool part in the Glentathlon Duathlon in Martinstown.

The challenging event sees competitors complete a 7k run, a 20k cycle, before finishing with a final 2k run.

James Robinson performed well, leading the East Coast contingent home in 1:29:16 (fifth place). Danny Hylands followed just 14 seconds later in 1:29:30, and it was enough to take sixth place overall and first place in his age category. Drew Girvin recorded 1:34:44 (17th place), before Phil Smyth crossed the line in 1:56:09 (58th place).

Kelly Deller continued the club prize haul, winning the Ladies’ Open category in 2:05:30 (eighth-place lady). Jenny Magill (11th place lady – 2:18:02) finished well despite a navigational error during the cycle.

Unfortunately, Mark McManus had to withdraw from the event after suffering a fall. Everyone at East Coast AC wishes Mark a speedy recovery.

On Sunday, Allan McCullough joined tens of thousands of runners on the start line of the Bupa Great Birmingham Run (13.1m) in England. Allan was rewarded for his efforts with a new half-marathon personal best of 1:35:26.
