Athletics sisters excel both indoors and outdoors

WHAT a week for the Brown Sisters from Glenravel who both competed in the District C Cross Country Races at University of Ulster Coleraine on Tuesday 5th of February representing Ballymena Academy.

The racing took place in what can be only described as harsh conditions. The heavy muddy course was an extra challenge for all the children taking part.

Suzannah ran in the junior girls race (Year 10). She set a very tough pace from the outset to lead for approx. 1700m, and coasted home comfortable in 4th place and achieving qualification for the Final of the Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships on Wednesday 13th February.

Rachel ran in the mini girls race (Year 8) and just like her big sister led from the front to win in exceptional style and again qualify very comfortably for the Finals on Wednesday.

Saturday brought another day of racing for the sisters at the Ulster Indoor Championships in Meadowbank Arena, Magherafelt . Both girls ran in the 800m and both brought home medals.

Suzannah ran first in the Under 16 girls 800m, achieving a PB and 3rd place in a highly competitive race. Rachel was faced with time trials and 3 separate heats, the medals to be awarded to the 3 fastest finishers.

Rachel ran in the last heat and stormed her way around the track to win not only her heat but to place 1st by a comfortable margin of 6 seconds and have the privilege of being the Ulster Under 14 800m Champion of 2013.

This qualifies both girls to compete at the All Ireland Indoor Championships in the new indoor AIT Stadium in Athlone on the 23rd March.
