Athletics success for Coleraine High

IN recent weeks Coleraine High School pupils have had notable success in athletics.

Twenty- seven girls have qualified for the NEBSSA finals at Antrim Forum. All those girls who made it to Antrim finished in the top three of their event. Outstanding performances were recorded by event winners, Jessica McPeak in the U12 800m and high jump.

The U12 relay of Jessica McPeak, Ami Downey, Niamh Lockhart and Hollie Beattie. Ella Christie won the U13 shot and high jump and Naomi Morgan won the long jump and 200m.

Teanna Mills was first in the discus. In the U14 section Sophie Spence won the shot and Leanne Miller won the Javelin. Jessica Moore was first in the 800m. In the U15 section, Leona O’Rielly won the discus, Beth Montgomery won the 1500m and Deborah Gilliland won the 800m.

At the NEBSSA finals in Antrim the U13 team were placed second overall and the U12 team were placed third overall. Winners at the final included Naomi Morgan in the long jump, Ella Christie and Sophie Spence in their respective shot events and Jessica McPeake in the high jump.

At the District Championships, thirteen athletes qualified for the Ulster Finals on Saturday the May 22. They all finished in the top three of their events. They include, Jessica McPeake (800m and high jump), Niamh Tweedie (800m), Victoria Murdock (shot), the U12 relay, Naomi Morgan (hurdles) Teanna Mills (discus), Sophie Spence (shot),Christina Corbett (800m), Deborah Gilliland (1500m), Mollie Kane (hurdles), Claire Cochrane (high jump), Alex Kirk (long jump) and Leona O’Rielly (discus).

At the Ulster Finals Claire Cochrane was crowned Ulster Champion in the Intermediate Girls high jump. Sophie Spence was placed fourth in Ulster in the junior shot and other pupils who finished in the top eight in their events included, Teanna Mills sixth in the junior discus, Jessica McPeak seventh in minor high jump, Christina Corbett, seventh in the Intermediate 800m and Alex Kirk eighth in the Intermediate long jump.
