Athletics: Wilkie’s Run takes place tonight

Wilkie’s Run, Foyle Valley Athletic Club’s annual run/walk in memory of their late colleague Colm Wilkinson, takes place tonight.

The course for both will be the same as previous years, along the cycle path by the River Foyle at Brandywell, known locally as ‘The Line’.

Registration for the event opens at 6pm at the Long Tower Youth Centre. Both the walk and run will start at 7.30pm.

Entry fee of £10 will include a tee-shirt for the first 120.

While a mix of road and T&F action this weekend as the Mary Peters track host three separate meetings and road races in Killyclogher and Newry.

The second round of the NI Youth Development League has an early start in Belfast tomorrow and the local City of Derry Spartans U13, 15 and 17 squad will travel to continue their push for a place in the League finals later in the summer.

There is also an interesting evening promotion at the same venue, a joint venture by Beechmount Harriers and the Irish Milers Club, featuring a classy programme of Sprints and Middle Distance events.

A number of local athletes should see some action with Declan Reed and Scott Rankin said to be possible starters in the featured 3000m race and the 1500m should also see some local input.

Round 1 of the National Senior League is in the Belfast venue on Sunday and for the first time in recent years there will be a limited input from local clubs.

Back to the road and the annual Killyclogher 10K has a 11am start from the local Tyrone GAA club and the Newry Marathon and Half Marathon is on Sunday morning.

Looking ahead to next Wednesday’s Furey Insurances Buncrana 5K at 7.30pm from Scoil Mhuire. Entries will be taken there on the night from 6pm and pre entry can be made via [email protected]

A mention of last Tuesday’s Inter Firms 5K in Letterkenny and another win for Keith Shields who clocked 15 minutes and 36 seconds to win from Chris McGuinness on 15 minutes and 48 seconds. Gemma McGinty ran 19 minutes and 22 seonds for third lady, behind winner Finnoula Diver who posted a terrific 17 minutes and 58 seconds. Roy McGilloway was the top male Junior on 16 minutes and 27 seconds and it was good to see Eoghan Furey of the Buncrana 5K sponsors post a sub 18m run in the colours of his employer the Letterkenny IT.
