Aussie Rules first for Kilrea girls

A RECENTLY established Aussie Rules ladies football team took to the field at St Paul's School, Kilrea on a wet and cold afternoon to play a trial match against a select Dublin squad.

The aim of the match was to set up a team of ladies footballers who would be selected to represent Ireland in Italy on October 2.

The newly formed club, the 'Kilrea Kookaburra’s' is the first ladies Aussie Rules club to be established in the whole of Ireland and it falls under the leadership of Belfast Redbacks player Andrew Hickey.

The match was a hard fought contest and it was decided by the Irish selectors that all girls who played the match were eligible to play for the Irish side or a combined European side in October’s Internationals.

In more recent days, the Irish squad have been in preparation for the Eurocup, they are due to leave Dublin Airport on October 1 to play in the prestigious European International Tournament on the Saturday.

With the whole of the nation backing this newly developed team, the ladies will be hoping to bring home some silverware.
