Awards night for Olympians

LISBURN 2gether Special Olympics Club recently held its Gala Awards Ceremony in the Lagan Valley Island Centre.

The annual event is held to celebrate the success of athletes and acknowledge both the athletes and volunteers for their dedication and commitment to their sport and club.

The host for the evening was Tim McGarry, better known as ‘Da’ from Give My Head Peace, who was a great hit with athletes and guests alike.

Bocce athletes received their awards from former World Super-middleweight Boxing Champion Brian Magee, football awards were presented by Michael O’Neill, NI Football Manager, Brendan Courtney, Lisburn City Council presented the badminton awards and Bethany Firth, Gold Medallist in the 2012 Paralympic Games presented the swimming awards. The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Chris Jennings by Jim Kirkwood, Honorary Chairperson and Michael O’Neill, NI Football Manager.

Trevor Tate officially handed over the new football kit to coach Ken Duncan and athletes Gareth Diack and Peter McCord. The kit was sponsored by Trevor Tate & Son and Unison.

The evening was a great success and enjoyed by all with particular thanks being expressed by Chairperson Lorraine Foster to special guests, sponsors, athletes, volunteers and committee for their continued support of the club.
