Away win boosts title hopes for Lurgan Ladies

Banbridge 53 (1)

Lurgan 68 (6)

An excellent 15-shot away win for Lurgan Ladies against Banbridge last Thursday has really boosted their chances of winning the NIWBA Senior League, having lost only one match so far this season.

They were never behind Banbridge at any stage and totally dominated the second half on three of the four rinks.

Genny Little skipped on Rink 1 with Nora Johnston, Irene Cunningham, and Gwen Hayes against M Campbell’s home rink.

Losing 5–2 after 6 ends they took the remainder of the ends with some magnificent bowling, to which the opposition offered no response, eventually storming to a great victory by 20–9.

On Rink 2 Winifred Kirkwood, skip, K McGrail, young Chloe Wilson and Edith Hobson raced into an early lead of 9–1 after 9 ends but faced a determined from the home rink who squared the game at 10–10 after the 14th end. Kirkwood’s rink responded defiantly and collected brilliant triple and double shot wins to lead 18–10 going into the last end. Although they dropped a couple of shots on the 18th end they won well by 18–12.

Angela Thompson skipping on Rink 3 and supported by Gloria White, Molly McBarron and Beth Wilson started well and led 5–0 after 4 ends but the next 5 ends were in favour of the Banbridge rink who took the lead by 9–5.

Thompson’s rink kept well in touch in spite of losing some of the second-half rinks.

She urged her rink on and they took a valuable 6 shots off the 14th to 16th ends to trail 15-14 going in the final end; but a 3-shot loss on that end cost them a win and allowed McAdam’s rink to take it 18-14.

On Rink 4 Molly Ward, skip, Geraldine Tallon, Dot McCoy and Maura McGoldrick fought hard to win their rink and gain a valuable point against M Adams’ home rink.

Their game was all square at 5–5 after the 10th end. An credible 12 shots off the next four ends appeared to set them on a victory path but the home rink reacted strongly to win the last four ends.

Ward’s rink restricted them well to eventually take the rink by a close score of 16–14.

Lurgan Ladies’ youngest player, teenager Chloe Wilson played at Belmont last Sunday in her first competitive singles game at Ireland Under 25 level and although losing 18–9 to a much more experienced opponent, she gave a good account of herself, such that she has been invited to play in an Irish Under 25 pairs tournament at the end of next month.
