‘B’ team serves up win

THERE was a better week for Banbridge Tennis Club with the B team notching up their first win of the season with an impressive 7-1 score line away to CIYMS E.

The second men’s doubles partnership of Greg Radcliffe and Ivan Ewart had a fourth consecutive win but many of the matches went to a third set and this time Banbridge took the lead. The rest of the team consisted of Catherine Russell, Kathryn Thompson, Mary Morrow, Gladys Montgomery, Conor Morrow and John Cowan.

The A team were at home this week to Muckamore and were still missing their number one man. The score of 5-2 to the visitors did not do the home team justice with wins for first mixed, first and second ladies but several of the other matches were very keenly fought and taken to a third tie-break set. Unfortunately Muckamore had the edge and returned home with a victory.

The evergreen ladies lost their final match of the season, this week playing away to Downpatrick. In spite of losing their matches the ladies have hopefully enjoyed the experience and had a taste of League tennis in that age group.

Due to withdrawals or inability of opponents to field a team, this week has been a quiet one for Banbridge Juvenile League matches, yet a successful time for the under 18 boys teams.

Having suffered a heavy defeat last week against a side featuring the Irish number one, the A team welcomed back Matthew McClune at number one seed. Match shy, due to illness for two months, Matthew had a convincing 9-2 score over Ballymena’s number one player and then he joined forces with Josh Edwards to win the Doubles by the same score. Conor Morrow and Mark Goan had similar victories and Banbridge recorded a convincing 6/0 win.

The B team travelled to Helen’s Bay - a difficult venue to win at - and forced a 3-3 draw, with great play by David McClimmonds and Craig Campbell to add to last week’s success.

Banbridge C team struggled at times against a young determined Hilden side, however, clever play by Robbie Scott and Nathan Gray secured a 4-2 winning result, backed up by a fine doubles display from Chris Sayers and Andrew Jackson.
