B team suffer shock against rivals

Lurgan B were in a state of shock after their defeat by local rivals Portadown B on their green in the NIBA Junior Cup second round last Wednesday evening.

At the halfway stage Lurgan B were nine shots ahead and still in the lead by six shots after 15 ends but they relented during the last six; allowing the home side to collect an incredible 30 shots to eventually win 82-75.

Eamonn Quinn’s rink was going well on Rink 1 and were twelve shots up at 16–4 after the eleventh end but the home rink crept back to win the next six of the next seven ends and went into the lead 18–17. Quinn’s rink responded by gaining two shots but succumbed to a four-shot loss on the final end to go down 23–19. Dan Dempsey’s men played against the home rink skipped by Robert Cassells on Rink 2. Opening ends were traded with the score being 7-7 all at the midpoint. They were the losers over the next three ends and were adrift by 7 shots after the fourteenth end with the deficit being the same after the fourteenth. Dempsey encouraged his rink to respond p and they won the next three ends to be one shot off the lead but dropped another one on the last end to lose 18–16.

On Rink 3 Gordon Bell, skip, and his colleagues put up a fine show. They bowled excellently to keep well in front in an effort to compensate for the overall narrowing gap. At the midpoint Bell’s rink were leading 13–8. Aided by a six-shot win on the thirteenth end they raced ahead 21-9 and were well ahead by 28–11 after the twentieth end. They dropped four shots on the last end but still won their rink 28–15.

Bobby Jones’ rink against Noel Quinn’s Portadown rink on No 4 found themselves 8–0 down after five ends. Five shots each off the next ends kept Quinn’s rink still in the lead 13–5. While a costly seven shot loss from the twelfth to the fifteenth end put Jones’ rink further behind by 21–9. Another loss end by the Lurgan rink resulted in them being down another five shots and even though they won the last end they lost 26–14.
