Back nine earns Laurence top spot

THE club ran a further qualifying Open Stableford competition on Sunday, October 10.

Entries came from both member and visitor alike but obviously not on the same scale as during a summer month. Making a score on the course was still a problem for the majority of golfers. This time around seven golfers registered an under par return.

There were four returns of forty points and as usual the net prizes were resolved on their back nine returns. As a consequence it was the 40 points of Laurence Mitchell that came up trumps. This long time member was hardly thinking of first place after nine holes as he only had 16 points on his card. Par figures at holes one, eight and nine kept him in the picture. He found a new lease of life over the back nine and was rewarded with a sparkling tally of 24 points. He recorded a birdie at the fourteenth and followed it with a brace of bogeys. On a more buoyant note he managed pars on the other six holes. This surge on the back nine shot him into first place.

Colin McMullen from the Tandragee GC captured second place with a similar haul of 40 points. This nine handicapper had 19 and 21 points on the respective nines.

Third net on the day went to Michael McSherry. This eight handicapper also managed 19 and 21 points for the nines.

Three handicapper Timmy Cummins captured the gross prize on offer. Timmy won with a total of 35 gross points. Over the round Timmy had scores ranging from a birdie to a double bogey. Birdies on holes five, ten, eleven and sixteen proved vital. On the other hand a double bogey at the sixth and bogeys at holes three, four and fifteen took their toll as well. Pars were achieved on the rest of the holes. With 15 and 20 gross points on the nines he duly captured the gross award.

Incidentally the ladies’ prize was won by Margaret O’Neill with an one under par return of 37 points. Playing off a thirty four handicap Margaret managed 21 and 16 points over the nines on her way to victory.
