Back-to-back defeats halts Curran’s good start

Two consecutive defeats in the space of two days halted Curran Ladies’ impressive start to the 2015 season.

On Wednesday (May 13) away to Antrim Lawn in the first round of the Joyce Kavanagh Trophy, the locals again failed to adapt to the synthetic surface, losing by 44 shots to 22.

Travelling to 2014 Junior League champions Newry the following day, Curran although returning pointless, displayed real character.

On rink one P. Blair, S. McDermott, E. Magill and L. Simms missed out on a Hot Shot (all eight deliveries lying closest to the jack) on the first end recording a seven.

S. Rice (Newry) rallied her four and a thrilling game ensued. By way of a two-shot lie on the final end, the veteran Newry skipper returned a 21 to 20-shot winning card.

Rink two saw M. Hardy, L. Swann, R. Gallagher and V. Noble trail 8-0 after six ends. Over the remaining 10 ends, although outscoring their opponents 13-10, the Curran rink could not overcome the early deficit, losing out 18-13.

Result: Newry LBC 39 shots (5 points) Curran LBC (0 points). Curran travel to Dromore today (Thursday, May 21).

n This weekend Curran Bowling Club’s men’s team face a trip to Dromore for a Northern Ireland Bowls Association Division Two clash.
