BALLINREES SHOCK THE MARIAN

The Marian’s chances of winning the League this year took a serious knock when they travelled to Ballinrees this week and came away with no points.

Both teams were under-strength but take nothing away from Ballinrees’ performance. Andrew Kelly (B’rees) was drafted in to skip and he defeated James Martin (Marian) 15 shots to 12. Uel Gordon’s rink (B’rees) was much too strong for Joe Martin’s four (Marian) and won 18 shots to eight. Brian McAlary (Marian) then took on Victor Millen (B’rees) but lost 9 shots to 14 shots. Jonathan Calvin secured the overall win for Ballinrees when he beat William McCaw (Marian) 12 shots to six.

Loughanreagh are still in the hunt for League honours after an eight shots victory away to Boveedy. It was Boveedy however who drew first blood when Aaran Tennant beat Edwin Irwin (L’reagh) by one shot. Ian Ross (L’reagh) evened the match when he defeated Alan Catherwood (Boveedy) 11

shots to eight.

Alastair Steele (L’reagh) then eased the away team in front with a seven shot win over Doughie Morrow (Boveedy). Ashley McCahon won a second point for the home team with a one shot victory against Alan Irwin (L’reagh).

In the remaining game in Division 1 St. Mary’s beat Second Kilrea lifting six points in the process. It was the away team who started the better with Brian McGrath beating Aidan Cassley (St. Mary’s) eight shots to seven.

Declan McCann (St. Mary’s) brought the match back level with an eight shots to seven win against Ivan Smyth (2nd. Kilrea). Harold Kelly and Jordan Mullan, both St. Mary’s, had good wins against Nicky McCaw and Margaret Johnston respectively to secure the over-all win for the home team.
