Ballymena and Antrim athletes in promising form in season opener

Ballymena & Antrim Athletic Club members began their outdoor season last week with the opening round of the Firmus Super Six series.

The Forum-based club won the finals of this competition last year and showed they are going to be strong contenders again this year with some fine early-season performances at the Mary Peters Track.

In the Under 15 boys 100m sprint race, Slemish College pupil Ronan Campbell ran a barnstormer race to come out as winner in 12.44 seconds with Ballymena Academy’s Jonathan Cochrane taking second in 12.55 seconds. Turlough McDonald and Caleb Moore had creditable seventh and eighth place finishes.

The Under 15 girls 100m event saw a strong performance from Erin McMahon while in the Under 13 boys 100m race Zane McQuillan, Owen Campbell and Adam Courtney all showed great form.

In the Under 17 boys 100m, BAAC’s Peter Wright scored a win in one of the closest races of the night by edging out Scott McDowell from City of Lisburn by just one hundredth of a second. Reece McMurray was fourth with Luke Pollock, Daniel McConaghie, Joshua Courtney, Martin McQuillan and Andrew Doherty all performing well.

Lauren Roy (Slemish College) running in the Under 17 girls 100m category, decimated the field to win her race in 12.59 seconds.

The U15 Boys High Jump saw three BAAC athletes share first place with Daniel McCullough, Jonathan Cochrane and Caleb Moore all clearing 1.45m.

James Wright scored a first place in the Under 15 Javelin with a great throw of 27.64m while Zane McQuillan, Adam Courtney and Owen Campbell all performed well in the Under 13 boys long jump.
