Ballymena youth sides outclass Randalstown

Ballymena’s youth sides travelled to neighbours Randalstown on Saturday for what is traditionally a difficult Premiership fixture.

The Under 15s hit the ground running from the start and driven on by captain Van Loggerenberg they were soon in the home team’s ‘22’.

A strong back line attack saw scrum half McGarry slip the ball to Roebuck and he drove past two defenders to touch down for the first of his two tries.

The 15s continued to dominate possession with man of the match McMaster taking control at the breakdown. Another forward drive saw the ball moved to Lamont who gratefully crossed for his first score of the day.

The backs now joined began to assert their authority and with Logan making several strong runs it was only a matter of time before Getty collected a loose ball to touch down in the corner.

The second half brought more of the same punishment for the home team. Pattison took on several defenders before releasing scrum half Mills who ran in to score under the posts. The home team were now firmly on the ropes and the 15s continued to dominate with Cleary, Roebuck and McLoughlin adding tries.

As the game headed to a close their was time for a further score with the impressive McCormick crashing over to score a well deserved try. This was an excellent win for the 15s and their season is now firmly under way. Final Score: Randalstown 5 Ballymena 67.

The Under 17s had an equally impressive win against a very strong home team.

Despite having lost several key players to injury the 17s were determined to continue their strong start to the season.

With Jennings working hard in the loose the 17s were able to secure some good possession. Jonny Crooks made a darting run through the defence before passing to Hunter who crossed for the first of his two tries.

The 17s continued to dominate but were hit by a try against the run of play which levelled the scores.

With Mills and McKillon working hard at the breakdown the 17s were soon on the front foot and Simon Crooks side stepped several tackles before scoring in the corner. The second half saw the home team make some ground but an excellent tackle from Rock saw the loose ball collected by second row McIlroy, he sprinted from his own ‘22’ to touch down under the posts for the try of the day.

Another fine back line move saw the ball taken wide where Millar collected to dive for a score in the corner. The 17s finished their scoring with an excellent move which saw McNeill release the impressive Hunter for his second try of the day. The 17s now head to Letterkenny as leaders of the Premiership.

Final Score: Randalstown 10, Ballymena 25.
