Ballymoney brothers take British Isles bowls title

Two local brothers who teamed up to play pairs bowls for the first time together just two years ago have become the British Isles Pairs champions at their first attempt!

Barry and Rodney Kane from Ballymoney and Derrykeighan took the title at Llandrindrod Wells in Wales on Friday after beting English pairing Peter Shaw and James Avery in the final 23 - 10.

“We controlled the final fron the start and it was quite comfortable, the first two games we had were tougher,” Barry told the Times.

“Particularly the firfst game against Jersey, that was a really tough one because I knew one of the guys we were up against and knew what to expect.”

Barry and Rodney are members of Dunluce Bowling Club in Bushmills and have played bowls for years in various other teams.

Both have enjoyed success as far as British Isles level in triples and fours competitions but the brothers only teamed up as a pair two years ago.

They won the provincial title and the Irish title last year which qualified them to progress on to the British Isles championships at the weekend.

As well as outdoor bowls, Barry plays stadium bowls at Ballybrakes in Ballymoney while Rodney plays short mat indoor bowls for Benvarden.

The pair are planning a celebration at the end of the season - and they certainly deserve i!
