Ballymoney Cycling Club members compete in Causeway Coast Triathlon

BALLYMONEY Cycling Club Biesty’s Centra Tri Team were in action on Saturday at the Causeway Coast Triathlon in Portrush. David McAvoy, Philip Magill and Ricky McMaster completed the 1500m swim in the cold waters of the East Strand followed by a 37km bike ride and to end the agony a run along the beach to the White rocks and back again.

All three of the lads have been preparing for this and other upcoming events by taking part in Ballymoney CC events like road races and time trials.

The event was won by Barry Convery of Newry and Mourne Tri Club in a time of 2 hours 1minute 13secs. In 2nd place was other local rider from Bann Wheelers Rhodri Jones.

Wednesday evening saw the riders face the race of truth and test themselves against the clock on the Ballybogey line.

Again the young riders are giving these events a real lash, with Robbie Doherty (U14) breaking the half hour with a great time of 29mins 31secs. And under-12 rider Shay Donley recorded 35.32.

Winner on the night was Steven McAllister in a time of 22mins 9secs.

* Coming Events - This Tuesday evening is Round 4 of the Interclub Series promoted by Bann Wheelers on a circuit at Letterloan at 7pm. Sign on is at Kennedy’s yard. BCC Biesty’s Centra Racing Team will have a full squad of riders at this event.

* Over 200 top competitors from around the island of Ireland took part in the Spar Causeway Coast Triathlon, which is organised and hosted by the Triangle Triathlon Club based in Coleraine.
Participants completed a 1.5km swim in the sea before changing to the 40km cycle course and finishing with a 10km run.

Sponsors of the event, North Coast Leisure Ltd, opened its doors in June 2011 and is a family run business just outside of Portrush.

 It is the vision of local Dunluce teacher and outdoor sports enthusiast Stephen McKenzie.

“We are delighted to sponsor this major athletic event that celebrates the highest level of athletic endurance,” he said.

“We, as a cycling and outdoor pursuits store, feel very passionate about sporting activity in the area and this is an excellent opportunity for us to support up and coming sporting talent and encourage healthy and active lifestyles on our doorstep.”

“Portrush and the surrounding area provides an ideal location with its stunning beaches and testing cycling and running terrain which will push the athletes to their absolute limit and beyond!

“It is always a fantastic atmosphere with hundreds of athletes and their families down for the weekend and with Alan Simpson from Radio Ulster in the commentary box, there will be plenty of craic.

“Seeing over 200 athletes race run into the water at the start of the race is quite a spectacle, so come on down and support this exciting local event.”
