Ballymoney Rugby Club all set for new season

IF ever proof was needed of a sports club nurturing young talent and providing an important social outlet, all you need to do is go to Kilraughts Road any Saturday during the winter where scores of youngsters are being taught the rudimentary skills of rugby by Ballymoney Rugby Club.

The mini-maxi programme has more than 150 primary schools children attend and the standard of coaching and care is second to none.

Parents and children have benefitted from the initiative and the club want to see it grow and are encouraging more youngsters to take part.

The club, who began preparations for the new season with a friendly at Ballyclare on Saturday, currnetly field 5 senior mens teams, ladies senior team, under 13, 15, 17 and 19 youth teams and, as stated. have more than 150 primary school kids attend the Mini and Maxi Section.

The 1st XV currently play in Qualifying One, 2nd XV, 3rd XV and 4th XV play in Junior intermediate leagues and the 5th XV occupy the Minor Rugby Leagues. The Ladies Team in 2011-2012 entered the Ladies All Ireland 2nd Division.

The Club have a modern club house and function room open to the public and available to hire. It has a fully equipped gym, five changing rooms, showers and three state of the art sand matress pitches.

It is generally acknowledged that Ballymoney Rugby Club run a very efficient ship and their success on the field has helped maintain a spirt of enthusiasm and commitment by both players and officials.

Cup and league successes have been common place in the recent past and the club are hoping to maintain their good form and regard in rugby circles throughout the province and beyond.

The serious business got underway on Saturday when a 1st XV squad travelled to Ballyclare for a preseason friendly.

This was the first game of the season and proved a tough match after only three weeks of training. T

On Saturday 25th August the 3rd XV squard will be travelling to City of Derry rugby club for their annual 15 a-side competition.

Then the following weekend see’s the start of the competitive season. Saturday 1st September see the league start with the following fixtures

1st XV v Academy (home)

2nd XV v Carrick (away)

3rd XV v No Game

4th XV v Randlestwon (away)

5th XV v Limavady (home)
