Banbridge in defeat to Clones in the Junior Cowdy Cup opener

THE second leg of the first round match in the Junior Cowdy Cup between Banbridge and Clones was played last Sunday.

Colin Smylie is the Banbridge captain and his team had lost 1-3 away at Clones. This was not a bad result as Colin expected his team to win well at home.

Things did not go according to plan. John Convery and John Poots lost the opening game by 2 and 1.

Clones needed one and a half points for victory. Banbridge couldn’t afford another mistake.

Sean McGreevey and Billy Clarke won the second game by 2 and 1 to keep the match alive.

Gerry Blevins and Bertie Shaw were going well. They were 2 up after 16 holes and looked certain to win.

But it all became irrelevant when James Bryson and Willie Dickson halved their match.

That was it all over. Clones had won the match and everyone retired to the clubhouse.

It’s always a shame to go out in the opening round but someone has to lose and it’s not the end of the world.
