They lost the away leg 2-5 and they were 13 holes down.

Cathal O’Neill, Neville Kerr, Joe Glass and Cecil Wilson came on to the team to replace John J. Lennon, Gary McCormick, Gareth Martin and Alan Caughey.

The Lisburn men were quietly confident that they could get the two games they needed for victory. But golf is an unpredictable game and you never know what might happen.

Cathal O’Neill went out first for Banbridge and he won a brilliant game by 2 and 1.

Richard Coburn then won 5 and 4.

Neville Kerr won 2 up and the match score was now tied at 5-5.

John Gallagher won 3 and 1. Joe Glass, on his Ulster Cup debut, won 4 and 3.

Banbridge now led 7-5 with only 2 games to come in.

When Peter Hillen, the hero of the first leg, lost 4 and 2, the match was on a knife-edge.

Lisburn were one hole up and one game down.

If they could win the final game, that would be good enough.

Cecil Wilson, also playing in the Ulster Cup for the first time, was not overawed by the occasion. He played flawless golf to win his match by 4 and 3.

Banbridge won the second leg 6-1 and the tie overall by 8-6.

The second round will be a tester. Banbridge will have to ravel to Rosapenna. It’s a superb course but very far away.

They will maybe go there for three or four days and call it their holidays. One way or another, it will be good fun.
