Bangor smashed by rampant Castle

IT was a home fixture this week for the girls of Ballycastle Ladies Hockey Club, and their opponents were league favourites Bangor.

The last time these sides met, Bangor ran out 5-0 winners, so the girls knew what they were up against.

The game started at a very high tempo, and it wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken.

Keeping up her trend of scoring early goals, Kitty Dickson finished precisely after good work from Watterson and O’Reilly with four minutes on the clock.

Bangor however responded well and put the home side under some serious pressure, good defending in particular from Kane, Kernohan and McIntyre keeping them at bay.

But it wasn’t long before Bangor got the equaliser, with the attacker slotting home after a mix up in defence.

‘Castle were starting to find the form which had seen them score 13 goals in two games before today. Hard work in the middle from Maybin and good play from Todd and Peacock saw the home side starting to create a few more chances.

With 25 minutes on the clock the home side won the first penalty corner of the day, injected by Kernohan and teed up by Dickson, inform striker Niki ‘O Reilly hit a trademark strike which saw the ball just clip the backboard to make it 2-1.

This gave the away side a wake up call and it wasn’t long before they responded, a superb diving stick save from McMullan kept the initial attack out but the Bangor forward managed to scramble the ball over the line! A great save from the travelling keeper kept out Todds fine effort just before the break.

Wanting to keep their 100% record intact the Ballycastle girls started the second half with some confidence and style, passing the ball with great accuracy.

And it paid off, great work again from Todd and Peacock on the right saw a superb pass find Dickson at the back post who finished neatly against the away ‘keeper. Moments after the restart ‘Castle won their second penalty corner. The outcome was the same as the first with O’Reilly smashing the backboard with an unstoppable drive, 4-2.
