Basement club City sink Town

Armagh City 3

Banbridge Town 0

LOWLY Armagh City sunk Banbridge Town on Saturday thanks to two well known names.

Eduardo and Viera were on the scoresheet for the Holm Park club – although obviously they aren’t the pair best known to Arsenal fans.

The duo were snapped up by City as part of a unique tie up with Barcelona-based Fundacion Marcet in a project which will see the Championship One club benefit from the use of overseas coaches as well as seeing the introduction of overseas players to the local game.

It means that Town haven’t won since November 14 in the league – a statistic that will surely worry boss Colin Malone.

And to lose to his former club, who with this scored their first win of the season, will be a huge blow to the Lurgan man.

City named six of their new overseas signings while new technical staff, Thiago Denardin and Luis Fernando, took charge for the first time

It took 30 minutes for Armagh to take the lead when defender Eduardo Filho headed home a cross by Josep Pique.

They doubled their lead when Ronilson Viera rose highest in the box to also head home an inch perfect cross from substitute David McLarnon in the second half.

Town’s misery was compounded four minutes into time added on at the end of the game. Viera’s 20 yard effort deceived David Wilton and send the home fans into raptures.

So while things are looking up for Armagh you’d think they couldn’t look much bleaker for Banbridge.

But then a quick glance at the fixtures list tells you that Town’s next game, on Saturday afternoon (3pm) is a home game against league leaders Limavady United.

Goals from McConaghie and Jennings sent the North West club, managed by former Linfield midfielder Oran Kearney, into the semi finals of the WKD Intermediate Cup after a win against Carrick Rangers on Saturday.

Saturday’s defeat leaves Town six from bottom, 11 points above Armagh and five away from third from bottom Coagh United. Ballinamallard, who sit just behind the Town in the league table, have six games in hand over the Crystal Park side so a result of any kind would be a huge plus.
