Basketball summer camp announced

LOCAL basketball club North Star has managed to secure a host of top quality coaches from across the world to attend their seventh annual children's summer camp which will take place between the 16th and 20th August in St Columb's College and St Joseph's College in the city.

Gavin Garland will be returning as head coach and brings a wealth of experience coaching at national league level but the Belfast native really excels as an outstanding children's fundamentals coach. Gavin is a former winner of the prestigious Northern Ireland Sports Coach of the year award.

Gavin will be joined by three new coaches. Maurice Wood hails from Philadelphia in the United States and attended the historical Wiley College in Texas where he lead the 'Wildcats' to four successful seasons.

He will be joined by fellow American Erin Hunter who hails from Pittsburgh and was head coach at Edmund Burke High School in Washington, DC.

North Star are also delighted to announce that they will be joined by Andy Gill who has a wealth of basketball coaching experience. Andy is a level 3 EBBA coach who was head coach of two English national league clubs (T.V. Tigers and the MK Lions) as well as coaching the Welsh international men's team. He is currently the Director of Basketball at the multi-Award winning Raines Foundation School in London.

These coaches will be joined by the experienced North Star coaching staff as they intend to run their most successful camp to date.

Camp organiser Niall McDermott is delighted with the level of coaches that they have managed to attract: "Without a doubt this is the highest calibre of coaches that we have managed to secure for the camp since it began seven years ago.

"We have the best youth coach in Northern Ireland in Gavin Garland and our two American coaches will really bring something new to the table and get the kids excited. Also we are delighted to have Andy Gill on board; his basketball coaching pedigree speaks for itself."

The camp is open to boys and girls aged from 7 to 19 and beginners are welcome. Players will be sorted into groups according to age and basketball experience.

There are a few limited spaces left for the camp and anyone wising to secure a place can download an application form from www.NorthStarBasketball.com or contact the club via email at [email protected] or on (0775) 239 5052. All places are allocated on a first come first served basis.
