BB Junior Company in action

LAST week a combined 1st and 2nd Route under 15 Boys Brigade team took part in the Northern Ireland District seven-a-side Rugby Competition at Omagh Rugby Club.

In their first game they played 4th Portadown and after a slow start and going 5 nil behind they kicked into life with some powerful, mazy running.

First to score was James Reid, followed by Peter Dunlop, Stewart McKinney and finally Peter Dunlop got his second. Each try was the result of good team work and excellent finishing.

Two of the tries were converted, leaving the final score 24-5

Next up was 7th Portadown, a very big and physical team. The boys started well and could easily have taken the lead. However, it was the Portadown side which scored first and despite receiving two yellow cards ran out winners by 31 points to nil.

It was a credit to the boys who kept playing to the end and kept their discipline throughout.

In the third game they played 1st Garvagh and were convincing winners 50 points to Nil, scoring eight tries and five conversions. The try scorers were Robert McKinney, Peter Kerr, Matthew Christie, Craig Henry with Stewart McKinney and James Reid scoring 2 tries each. This was a good performance, with every member of the squad playing their part. 1st Garvagh deserve credit for sticking to the task and playing to the end.

The final game in the group was against another big side, 1st Killinchy, who were coached by Brian McLaughlin (Ulster’s Coach). The boys started well with some very good seven’s play. They used the ball well, but could not get passed the strong Killinchy defence. Eventually Killinchy scored four tries to leave the final score 20 points to nil in Killinchy’s favour.

This resulted in the boys finishing 3rd, a very creditable performance from a very young side. The squad consisted of the strong running Robert and Stewart McKinney, the hard tackling Ross Kerr, Craig and Mark Henry, and the illusive running of Peter Dunlop, James Reid, Matthew Christie, Peter Kerr and Tom Boreland.
