Beckham? Ronaldo? No - Give me Parky!

DAVID Beckham, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Didier Drogba are all renowned for their ruthlessness when it comes to free-kicks on the edge of the box.

But presented with a dead ball situation when needing a goal in the dying minutes of a game, there’s only one man Glebe Rangers boss Gareth Scott wants to see standing over the ball - Trevor Parkhill.

The Rangers front man has been in scintillating form this season, banging in 15 goals - ten of which came in the league - to rocket him towards the top of the scoring charts.

Always regarded as a never-say-die bustling forward, in the past couple of seasons Parkhill has been making a name for himself as a bit of a set-piece wizard, delivering pin-point corners and free-kicks.

And the 26-year-old enhanced his growing reputation with another stunning 30 yard strike against Bangor to set Glebe on their way to an impressive victory on Saturday.

“You can talk about Ronaldo and David Beckham but give me Trevor Parkhill anytime from a free-kick,” quipped Glebe boss Scott.

“He’s now up there at the top of the goalscorers chart in terms of league goals and you have to give him respect for that.

“It was a first class finish from the free-kick and another big performance from Trevor Parkhill against Bangor.”

Asked about being ahead in the pecking order of the likes of Ronaldo and Beckham, modest Parkhill replied:

“I don’t know about that!

“I got a nice one against Bangor and I’ve scored two or three this season and four or five last year.

“I spend some time in training practicing them and shooting and it’s nice to see them go in.”

The former County Antrim Milk Cup star has played for a host of clubs including Coleraine Reserves, Ballymoney United, Ballyclare and Portstewart.

Throughout his career he has demonstrated a keen eye for goal coupled with a natural poacher’s instinct, banging in more than 30 goals a season for Dunaghy and Glebe in the past.

Scott obviously holds Parkhill in high regard - and the respect is mutual.

“There is a buzz about the place now,” he said about Scott’s appointment. “He has everything down to the smallest detail.

“We were on a bad run and the confidence was low but he has everyone working for him.

“Another couple of wins and I believe we can pull Coagh and Banbridge in.”
