Benade hails players after win

Dromore 16

Clogher Valley 14

DROMORE entertained Clogher Valley at Barban Hill on Saturday last where groundsman John McClelland had the pitch in fine shape despite the wet conditions.

Dromore opened the scoring through a Russell penalty before a massive driving maul for Dromore produced good field position, Tom Finn fed big Stevie Robinson who slipped a neat inside ball to Harshaw who scored at the post, Russell added the conversion.

Valley attacked Dromore for the remainder of the half and were rewarded with a try by their No 8 Sharkey on the stroke of half time after a scrum close to the Dromore line.

Two quick penalties by John Russell nudged Dromore to 16-7 ahead and with the wind this looked a favourable lead, but Dromore were severly disrupted by injuries to John Russell (dislocated shoulder) and Ally Kinghan (ankle), who were replaced by Adam McDonald and Bryan Davidson.

Coach Jacques Benade’s hair was going greyer by the minute and when Brigl was yellow carded half way through it seemed that Valley would close the gap.

Dromore made them work for every inch but some strong running by the Valley midfield forged a gap and produced a try and conversion to leave the scores 16-14 with ten minutes on the clock, Dromore’s line was now under seige but they held out with fine defence and a belief that they could win.

Coach Benade said, “We held out in the end but that game was won by a Dromore side who have gained in belief and confidence in each other.

“I have a bunch of players who want to play for each other and we will improve every week now, really pleased with a win against a determined Clogher Valley outfit.”
