Bertie tops scoring at Raceview as competitors enjoy better weather

A much-improved day of weather conditions produced an abundance of fine scores at Ballymena Golf Club, where a good turnout of competitors left the first tee.

The top score in the 13-hole sweep was posted by Bertie McIlvenna who, playing off a handicap of 25, netted 34 points.

Twenty-three of those points came from the first nine holes, where he scored four pars.

The final four holes saw Bertie notch another trio of pars, only to drop three shots on the par four 11th, for a single point.

Second place was taken by 22-handicapper David Clements who scored a total of 32 points, of which 21 came from the opening nine holes.

He then added two pars plus dropped shots at the 10th and 12th for an additional 11 points.

Category one was won by Mark Surgenor who, having a free Saturday from his footballing duties with Carrick Rangers, showed his prowess with the smaller ball as he notched 31 points.

A front nine of six pars, birdies at the seventh and ninth plus a lone dropped shot on the second yielded 22 points to which he added three pars plus a bogey at 11 for nine more points in a superb round of level par gross.

Felix McQuillan topped category two where the nine-handicapper had 31 points, adding 11 points from a level par final four holes to his total of 20 points for the first nine.

Derek Smyth (16) scored a round of six over par gross for 32 points, 11 of which came from the final four holes, as he won category three.

Category four provided a win for Allan McCullough (27) who finished his round with a total of 32 points with the first nine holes worth 23 points, which included four-pointers on the second, fifth and ninth.

The previous week’s competition was won by Eugene M Reid (19) with 30 points on a better last four hole total from David Chambers (16).
