Biesty’s Boys are tops in cycling –and getting selected in the process

Ryan Orr selected

to ride for Ulster

Under 16 rider Ryan Orr, winner this year of the Mid Ulster GP and the Noel Teggart Memorial Road races has been selected to represent Ulster (Northern Ireland) at the United Kingdom School games in September.

With cycling an integral part of the school games famous names like Tour de France riders like 2012 winner Bradley Wiggins and multi stage winner Mark Cavendish along with top female and Olympic rider Emma Pooley have been competitors at the School games and have used them as a spring board to success.

wins at Dervock

With a good field of 30 riders split into 5 groups on the five mile Dervock/Derrykeighan circuit it was only after some determined riding that the front groups led by Martin Burke were eventually reeled in and a bunch sprint saw the 30 mile race being won by Steven McAllister of the local BCC Biesty’s Centra Racing Team.

A big thank you for the continuing support goes to riders from Bann Wheelers, TSC, Bann Valley, Spires, Duffin Transport and Dunloy who make the racing a better quality event and with average race times of around 25/26mph average these are not only competitive but ideal preparation races for Open events at the weekends.

Clare Dallat is home

for the Nationals

Clare Dallat originally from Aghadowey but riding for the Bicycle Superstore in Australia made the long journey home

to represent Ulster at the Irish Elite National woman’s time trial and road race.

Clare who works and lives in Melbourne is a member of this professional woman’s team. Clare has had some great success in her preparation to come to Ireland.

Missing a bronze medal in the Australian National Championship time trial by 62 seconds.

Riding against full time professional riders from teams like Orica Greenedge whose men have held the yellow jersey in this year’s Tour de France.

With Ballymoney rider Steven McAllister looking after Clare as her mechanic at the 25 mile national TT championship in Carlingford, it was not long before it was clear that she was not enjoying good health and her heart rate was high and her power well down on normal.

Nevertheless she still managed to get 5th on the day with a 60 minute ride compared to gold medal winner Caroline Ryan who rode a 58 minute time. In the road race on the Saturday despite feeling a bit better Clare’s progress was hampered by a crashes she had to take to the grass and then spend the rest of the race chasing to get back onto the bunch again.

With plans already in place Clare in 2014 will be riding for BCC Biesty’s Centra Racing Team at the Irish nationals and will have more time spent here in Ireland riding selected events nearer the time of her event.

With a plan to take on some of the Cycling Ulster as well as Irish National events. With 2014 a Commonwealth Games year it is very much a case of watch this space as selection is still openfor riders wanting to represent Northern Ireland in Glasgow.

Coming Events

This Sunday Ballymoney CC will hold the Ulster 10 mile TT Championships on the Greysteel - Maydown course.

This is the first time that this course has been used so it will be a great opportunity for someone to set a new record for 2013. Sign on is opposite the Vale centre from 8.30am.

This Wednesday evening Ballymoney CC are holding a 10 mile TT from the “Port to the Toon” starting at North Coast Leisure above the Royal

Court Hotel, and going to Ballymoney and round the Portrush Rd at Biesty’s Centra and finishing on the Ballybogey line. Sign on from 6.45, starting at 7.30pm

Meanwhile, Bann Wheelers Cycling Club have displayed their new club kit during the official launch of the club’s annual sportive with their sponsors SPAR and Henderson Wholesale Limited.

The charity cycle sportive will take place on Sunday 28 July at 10am. The start/finish is at Coleraine Rugby Club.

This cycle challenge is for all cyclists from the experienced racer (60 miles) to the person who just enjoys going out on their bike (35 miles).

This year we are very pleased to be sponsored by Culbertson’s Spar, The Rosses, Ballymena and Henderson Wholesale Limited. Many thanks to Martin Culbertson proprietor of Culbertson’s Spar and to Henderson Wholesale Limited in hopefully making the 2013 event the biggest and best sportive yet.

Refreshments will be supplied around the route and at the rugby club when you have finished your cycle.

All competitors will receive a t-shirt of the event.

Organisers extend the invite to their sportive to all cycle clubs. Anyone who has a bike and wants a challenge and is not a member of a cycle club is also most welcome.
