The Woodside Road team, chasing a fifth consecutive League Cup triumph, were 38 shot winners at Harryville Community Centre.

Wesley Caldwell’s rink showed no seasonal cheer as they eclipsed Gary Worthington’s quartet by 18 shots to nil, while on the other mat, Grant Robinson’s rink ran out 13-shot winners over Harold Smyth.

Harryville’s task became even more uphill after the break as Matthew Boyd and Graham Wilson steered their rinks to convincing wins over Joe Patterson and Willard Reid.

BPFA ‘A’ made light of their 20-shot handicap deficit as they breezed to victory at Antrim Indoor Bowling Club. AIBC’s 20-shot advantage had been wiped out by the halfway mark, thanks to convincing wins from Broughshane’s Alan Cahoon and Doran Turtle.

The second half continued in the same pattern with wins from David Morrison and Andrew Morrison’s rinks ensuring that Antrim, even with 20 shots to come in the second leg, will only start five shots ahead in real terms.

There was another clear-cut victory as Old Bleach will have to win by more than 40 shots in the second leg to avoid elimination at the hands of BIBC.

Tommy Hill, Nigel Robinson and Danny McCullough all steered ‘BI’ rinks to a 30-shot win which will become 40, once the second division side’s 10 shots on handicap are added on for the second leg. Old Bleach’s plight would have been even worse but for Neil Booth’s rink scoring five shots on the last end to see off Roy Torrington.

And it could be an all-second division semi-final if Golf Seniors can follow up their 18-shot first leg over Portglenone Community Centre, with a further 10 shots to come.

Ian Lecky, Ivan McMaster and John Nichols all skipped winning rinks for the golfers, while Eamon Cassley’s quartet kept Portglenone’s hopes alive wit ha 10-shot win over Donald Smyth.
