BIKES: Vintage Motor Club welcomes in New Year with pedal power!

WHILE weather conditions over the Christmas period were far from suitable for motorcycling, the customary creative thinking of the North West Vintage Motor Cycle Club allowed members to welcome 2010 on two wheels - but using pedal power rather than the usual internal combustion engine!

The event, masterminded by Stewart McDonald, was supported by some 12 cyclists, some of whom actually completed the NW200 course under their own power while others made use of strategically placed support vehicles.

This was an entertaining and worthwhile way of celebrating the New Year - same time next year perhaps?

The holiday period saw yet another NWVMCC event taking place, a well-supported minibus visit to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum at Cultra.

Once again Stewart McDonald and his team were pivotal in organising this trip which brought back many memories for those who took part.

Looking towards the coming season NWVMCC members attending the January meeting were asked to consider items for the events calendar which John Scott and team will soon be putting together.

Firm dates are already in place for the two day run which will be centred in Co Down, 14 places having already been reserved at Newcastle's Golf Links Hotel for July 24-25. John will be happy to pass on details of this event to those interested in attending.

Danny Leighton's Run, normally scheduled for the first Saturday in April, may be changed this year due to its coinciding with the Easter weekend.

Further details will be available at the February and March club meetings while at later meetings members can expect the return of the ever popular Liam Beckett, with special guests, as well as one of Chris Sharpe's interesting and entertaining slide shows.

In the near future there are at least three events worthy of note: Jack Agnew gave notice of a Vintage and Classic Show at 1st Comber Presbyterian Church on January 29-30 while Greenmount will host the show formerly held at Muckamore, on February 27.

The King's Hall, Belfast, will be the venue for Billy Nutt's show on February 12-14. The new VFR 1200 will be launched at the show and there will be displays from major manufacturers as well as from the Vintage Japanese, Chopper and Scooter clubs. A number of personalities from the world of motorcycling will attend.

Billy requests support from the owners of classic machines for a special display. Further details can be obtained from his office.

The meeting showed its respect for the Esler family on their recent bereavement, wished Raymond Spence a speedy recovery and welcomed back Jim Scott after his illness.

North West Vintage Motor Cycle Club wishes members and supporters a very happy 2010 with many safe and enjoyable miles to come.
