BIKES: Whyte to remain in British Superbike steward post

NORTH West 200 Race Director Mervyn Whyte has been reappointed to the role of MCRCB Chief Steward for the 2010 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship.

Whyte, who took up the position for the first time last year, says experience gained from his top level involvement in BSB will complement his managerial position at the North West 200.

"I'm delighted to once again take on the role of Chief Steward at the 2010 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship series," he said.

"Last year was a very enjoyable challenge and I enjoyed working with Stuart Higgs and the rest of the team immensely.

"I see my role as a great opportunity to gain more knowledge and experience in the world of motorsport, which I hope I can bring back and apply in Northern Ireland," added Whyte, who received an MBE for Services to Sport in 2008.

"I'm already looking forward to the new championship season."

Whyte will continue to work closely with BSB series director Stuart Higgs.

The 2010 BSB Championship will be held over 12 rounds, blasting off at Brands Hatch from April 3-5 and concluding at Oulton Park in October.

After stepping down as North West 200 Clerk of Course in August, Whyte was confirmed as the Race Director of the event three months later.

He will head up a seven-man management committee responsible for overseeing key organisational elements of the international sporting spectacle.

The new chain of command has been facilitated by the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure (DCAL), the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) and Coleraine Borough Council.

A series of changes are being implemented at the North West for 2010, including safety improvements at Mather's Cross, while a proposal to hold a daytime practice session from 9.30am to 3pm on Thursday, May 13 is currently under consultation.

Last week, energy drink brand Relentless was unveiled as the new title sponsor of the North West 200, which will be held on Saturday, May 15.

The company also backs Ulster team TAS Suzuki, which will run Alastair Seeley and Michael Laverty in the British Superbike Championship and Cameron Donald and Bruce Anstey at the international road races.
