Bird goes after Gibson’s top spot

Lisburn’s Richard Bird is hot on the heels of old rival Gary Gibson as the 2014 Ulster Motocross Championships reach the halfway point at Downpatrick Motocross Park this Saturday.

The Nutt Travel.com Premier MX1 Class is led by defending champion, Ballygowan’s Gibson on his Bannside Pallets & Haulage/Russells Suzuki, but he’s only a slender seven points clear of Bird on the Five5 Motorsport Watt KTM 450.

Richard’s a full 10 points clear of Comber’s Wayne Garrett on the Mullan Motocross Watt KTM 350.

It is hard to look past the top three for an overall winner this Saturday. Gibson will be the narrow favourite after his impressive recent form but Bird won’t be far away from top spot.

In the other classes, plenty of local riders are aiming for top spot.

Another Lisburn rider is racing for the end of season honours in the Semi-Expert MX2 Class with Jay McCrum tied alongside Mark Patterson from Downpatrick at the top, both riders on KTMs. They’re only three points ahead of 15 year old James Mackrel on his little two stroke 125 Mullan Motocross/Fluid KTM, and with Husqvarna mounted Darren Grills just a further three back, Jay has plenty of competition for top spot.

The Semi-Expert MX1 Class is led by Newtownards man William Barr but William Donnelly from Dromara is 17 points behind in second.

Meanwhile, Jack Wilson from Ballynahinch and Ryan Adair from Dromara on the Adair Building Services Suzuki are chasing the lead in the Clubman MX2 Class.
