Blitz success for Sean Tracy’s

Sean Treacy’s U12 boys certainly fulfilled their potential on Saturday (15th March) in the annual Ulster provincial under 12 hurling blitz.

The venue was the Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt.

The event was fiercely contested and all of the teams showed the capability to succeed but the skill and determination of our local players was enough to see them win three, draw one and narrowly lose one match by a single score.

Donning the Seán Treacy jersey were Daire McDowell, Kane Laverty, Cory Laverty, Enda Mallon, Rory Og Gaynor, Cian McCrory, Aodhán McComb, Fiontán McComb, Christopher Larkin, Gabriel Basara and Eoin McConville.

The boys displayed signs of nerves prior to their opening match but these were soon put to rest with a goal to no score victory against Na Magha from Derry. The match was won with a very steady team performance. A busy keeper, Cian McCrory, ensured no goals were conceded and the single score from Enda Mallon boosted confidence.

The second game was against O’Cahan’s of Limavady who initially provided a more difficult test for the Lurgan team. After the opening two minutes it seemed this Armagh - Derry clash would remain a very tight affair. Seán Treacy’s defence held very solidly and ensured a defeat for the Lurgan team wasn’t on the cards in their second match. Of particular note were the performances of Cory Laverty, Fiontán McComb and Daire McDowell in the back line.

Seán Treacy’s most difficult challenge came against Carrickmore. The Treacy boys stuck two sliotars into the back of their opponents’ net and three sailed over the bar to equal Carrickmore’s tally of three goals. Gabriel Basara and Kane Laverty combined perfectly on more than one occasion to add to the team’s tally. Christopher Larkin very scored his first Seán Treacy goal.

The fourth and penultimate game was hotly anticipated as both Seán Treacy’s and Craomh Rua went into the game with an impressive tournament record. The side from Camlough put the Lurgan boys under pressure throughout the match and managed to score that all important goal in the last seconds to claim victory.

The last match was an opportunity to compete against another county Antrim team for the first time. Oisin’s goalkeeper’s puck outs caused trouble in the Lurgan defence but brave defending from Rory Óg Gaynor, Aodhán McComb and Eoin McConville denied their opponents on numerous occasions with some very brave blocks and tackles. Rory Og certainly left his best performance until the final game. His solid defence linked with the bravery of Fiontán’s and Cory’s tackles allowed the Treacy forward line the opportunity to smash two further sliotars to the back of the net.

The next underage outing will be on Saturday 3rd of March when the Under 10 boys make the same journey to Magherafelt to compete in the annual Ulster Under 10 blitz.

Underage training continues at Centrepoint for our under 10s and 12s on Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm and for our under 6s and under 8s on a Friday at 7pm.

As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, Seán Treacy’s are holding a Gala Dinner on Saturday 1st of March at 8pm in the Woodville Arms. For tickets (£20) contact Barry McDonald on 07872 650135.

Friday the 14th of February saw Seán Treacy’s hurling club host a blitz for the Under 8 boys.
