Blues land home draw

LINFIELD'S reward for beating Donegal Celtic at Suffolk Road on Saturday is a home tie with Dungannon Swifts in the next round of the Irish Cup.

The Blues came through a difficult tie 4-0 with goals from Paul Munster, Peter Thompson, Billy Joe Burns and one from the penalty spot from Jim Ervin.

"This was no easy tie and we talked about how dangerous it was but in the end we played very well and came through in style," said boss David Jeffrey.

"We were really fired up and started well and created a lot of chances in the first half, infact I lost count, but we had nothing to show for it. That was not down to bad finishing, it was the superb efforts from their goalkeeper Declan Brown who stopped everything.

"However, we got the breakthrough right at the end of the half with a lovely bit of skill from Paul Munster and it certainly made the half-time talk a lot easier.

"In the second half we moved up a gear and I was delighted to see Peter Thompson grab a goal. There was some talk it might be an og, but there is no way you could take that one off hin. All in all, a very good day and now we can look forward to the first cup final of the season when we face Crusaders on Wednesday night."

Peter Thompson brought the first save out of Brown on two minutes and more followed as Carville, Munster and Thompson again were all denied. Stephen Douglas sent a header crashing off the bar as the Blues searched for the opener.

The visitors did not have it all their own way and on more than one occasion they were caught flat footed with a ball through the middle. Stuart Addis did well when the defence were caught cold to get down and gather a shot from Gargin.

DC were headed for a scoreless first half but well into added time Munster's overhead kick gave Brown no chance and the Blues were in command.

The second half was just as competitive but when Thompson forced in number two after a great run by Michael Gault it was all over.

Billy Joe Burns sent a looping header in for number three and Jim Ervin completed the scoring from the spot after Jamie Mulgrew was bundled over in the box.
