Bonar rolls back the years

Campbellians Seconds 1 Lisnagarvey Fifths 6

Paul Bonar was the star of the show as Lisnagarvey Fifths came away from a potentially tricky visit to Campbellians with a well-deserved victory. The

Fifths didn’t have it all their own way and after starting well, they found themselves behind early on to a young and fast Campbellians Seconds.

The surprisingly hot day was making it difficult for either team to play with sustained pace but as the Fifths settled into the game the pressure on the Campbellians goal was relentless.

Bonar levelled the scores with a cool finish in the circle after some excellent approach work by Andy Watt. There were several good chances for

the Fifths to get ahead before half time but unfortunately none were taken. The start of the 2nd half almost had Campbellians back in the lead after a quick attack and fierce shot that was well saved by Shaw in the Garvey goal. Shaw followed this up with an amazing stick save from a well struck Campbellians penalty corner that looked destined for the back of the net.

Garvey needed to convert their pressure into goals and finally took the lead through Mark Murray with a calm finish following some good interplay with Rupert Pinion. Paul Bonar came up trumps for his second and Garvey’s 3rd when he stole in around the back and forced the ball over the line when the Campbellians defenders had erroneously left the ball thinking it was going out. The game then went rapidly beyond the home team after Murray rounded the keeper and walked the ball into an empty net following an incisive through ball by Andy Nye.

Bonar scored the goal of the game after a sweeping move across the Garvey midfield found Nye free on the right touchline. He provided a perfect pass

for the marauding Bonar to secure his hat trick with a trademark deflection from mid-circle that was in the net before the keeper had even moved. The

scoring was completed shortly after when Murray drew the keeper and squared for Grant Hayes to slot firmly into the Campbellians net.

An excellent outing for the Fifths and this completed the 4th victory in a row and leaves them heading the league at this early stage. Thanks go to Jamie Millar who umpired the game despite being injured himself.
