Borough’s sports stars are honoured

THEY came from all sporting codes and disciplines and from all areas of the borough - but all sharing the same common love of sport.

The 13th Ballymena Sports Awards once again showcased the rich array of sporting talent that resides and competes within the Ballymena borough.

The sumptuous surroundings of the Braid Town Hall complex once again played host to what has become the jewel in the crown of the area’s sporting social calendar for another memorable night.

Deputy Mayor Alderman William McNeilly, standing in for ill Mayor, Maurice Mills, said: “The Sports Awards Dinner allows us the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our local sportsmen and women.

“We are extremely grateful for the support which we receive from our sponsors particularly in this current climate. This support helps us to deliver this event in a manner, which befits the standard of the nominees, and I am delighted and thankful that these local companies and organisations continue to support this special event.”

The Deputy Mayor also reiterated Ballymena Borough Council’s support for sport in the borough through provision of facilities and also funding programmes such as the Sports Grants Scheme and Sporting Excellence Schemes.

Special presentations were made to shooter Kirsty Barr marking her participation in the Commonwealth Games and to the Irish Junior bowls team which competed in the British Isles Junior International Series, which was managed by Ballymena’s Jim Baker and included six members of Ballymena Bowling Club.

But the biggest cheer of the night went to Jackie Fullerton MBE who, as well as compering the event, also received a standing ovation as he was presented with a special recognition award marking his long contribution to sport, not only as a player but also in his acclaimed broadcasting career.
