BOWLS: Carnival day is prelude to challenging season

The Lisnagelvin greens saw the first bowls of the new 2016 season cast in competition, albeit a somewhat nepotistic occasion, as the club's Open Day heralded the gathering of members to fan the stirrings of an impending new and much anticipated campaign.

In perfect tandem with the auspicious occasion, the weather gave its seal of approval on the day’s proceedings as April sunshine acknowledged the programme of events about to unfold.

In his speech of welcome, club President George Burns welcomed everyone present, reflecting the mood of the occasion by positively highlighting the excellent turnout of members.

What would have particularly gladdened the heart of the new incumbent was the presence of potential new members, there to observe proceedings and perhaps become established names within the club from this day forward.

The day started with dignified solemnity with the unfurling of the club flag by the President, followed by the delivery of the first bowl by Beth Burns, wife of the President.

Conviviality was further fostered with the presentation to Mrs Burns of a bouquet of flowers by club treasurer Uel Galbraith.

Member’s participation in the day’s proceedings came courtesy of a club competition organised by senior members Willie Taylor and Ken McConomy.

The competitive edge was present from the off and a great day’s bowling ensued and emerging as victors were Adrian Simkins, Tommy Gault, Billy Jones and Alan Smyth.

As is their custom, June McClure’s lady bowlers once again provided the fitting finale by providing an absolutely splendid tea to all participants in what was a superb curtain-raiser to the new season.

The heraldry completed, rehearsal gave way to performance as the season opener featured City of Derry ‘B’ team locking horns with Coleraine 2nds.

In a keen encounter, the City team lost 5-2 but consoled themselves with the acquisition of two invaluable points.

Last Saturday the ‘A’ team opened their account with a home game against last season’s all-conquering Cookstown.

The Tyrone side served notice of intent as they carried last year’s form into the new season with a 6-1 victory over the homesters with a slick performance. Cherished dreams however are still intact!!
