Just three weeks after her unanimous win in Belfast over Donna Owens from Derrylin, Stacey said she was working hard on her fitness levels: “I have been focusing on my fitness and developing my skills in the ring. On Saturday of last week 11-year-old Cathal McLaughlin of Eglinton ABC, was in the right for the Ulster Nine Counties tournament in Monaghan.

It was only McLaughlin’s second fight, and he made it through to the semi-finals, but unfortunately did not secure a place in the final.

Nevertheless, his coach, Jim Knox, paid tribute to the young fighter, saying: “He did very well to get through to the final, but unfortunately came up against a very strong boy who prevented him securing a place in the final. That said we are proud of his efforts and Cathal will live to fight another day.”

Meanwhile, on Friday the Guildhall will be the venue for a boxing tournament.
