Coleraine athlete to box clever at World Police & Fire Games

One young boxer who is setting his sights on a medal at the World Police and Fire Games is 24 year old local man Adam Deighan.

A member of Coleraine Amateur Boxing Club and the NI Prison Service team, Adam has been boxing for over eight years and has watched many fights at the Ulster Hall but this is the first time he’ll be stepping into the ring at the venue and he can’t wait for all the action to begin.

“I’ve been training hard for the Games at my local club, Coleraine Amateur Boxing Club and coaches there have been putting me through my paces two and three times weekly,” he said.

“I’ve been doing a lot of padwork at the Club and I also train hard at lunchtimes at our NIPS gym undertaking body conditioning work and weight training. Part of my training regime also includes running on the local beaches near Coleraine and of course the recent fantastic weather has made that part of my training a real pleasure.

“As we’re currently in the close season, my last official fight was in March but in the past year I’ve only lost one competitive bout and I’m very pleased with my training and preparation to date. Having been a spectator at the Ulster Hall, the World Police and Fire Games are giving me a fantastic opportunity to actually now be in that famous ring and it’s a moment I certainly won’t forget!”

“I’m a recent recruit to the Northern Ireland Prison Service and the Games will be my first outing on behalf of the Boxing Team.

“But I really hope to make everyone proud and I’m certainly aiming high and I hope that lots of spectators will come along to the Ulster Hall to cheer on all the local teams. I’m sure my family and my fiancé Hannah will be there to support me!”
