Eleven year old Sam Mark picked up the Ulster Novice Title in Derry with two fine performances against opponents from Armagh and Donegal.

Under the watchful eye of coaches Sammy Wright and Daniel McAteer Young Mark boxed to instructions to overcome both opponents in style.

Coach Wright noted: “Sam was up against a strong lad in the final and the key for us and him was not to get involved in a brawl and to slip in and slip out. He executed that simple tactic very well and that’s why he’s now and Ulster champion.”

Meanwhile, Emeka Onwuka took gold in the Belfast Invitational Open tournament in Belfast with a convincing defeat of current Irish champion Connor McKernan, from Castleblayney.

The Ballee lad gained revenge for his disputed defeat by McKernan in the Irish semi-finals as he caught the Castleblaney man with every shot in the book and looks already even at this early stage of the season that he’s going to be hard to handle at the 60kg class after an outstanding performance.

Saints man Michael Stokes also lifted the gold in the 42kg class with two fine wins over the space of two nights.

He really had to be at his best to beat the strong Brendan McKnight from St Agnes in west Belfast in the final.

Coaches Dermot and TJ Hamill were very impressed as to how Michael counter punched the short stalky lad and kept it long theough out the bout making it hard for his opponent to work.

All Saints also has silver medals collected by Reece Marshal and Kyle McDonagh.
