Lewis crowned Irish champion

CHURCHLANDS Golden Gloves ABC was celebrating last week as they have a new Irish title holder in their ranks.

Eleven-year-old Lewis Dickey continues his meteoric rise in the sport as he claimed the Irish crown at the 48kg weight division.

Remarkably it’s the Millburn Primary School pupil’s FIFTH title in the last 12 months and Churchlands Head Coach, Mickey Fleming, was over the moon with Lewis’ victory.

“There’s no-one who deserves this more than Lewis,” Mickey told Times Sport.

“He has worked so hard over the last year and is really dedicated to his sport.

“Lewis has only lost once in 12 fights, that came in his second fight and he hasn’t looked back.

“We are all very proud of what he has achieved. He certainly has a very bright future ahead of him.”

Lewis stopped Saintfield’s Lee McVeigh in the first round of his semi final at the National Stadium in Dublin before beating Galway’s Brian Stokes 10-8 in the final.

When he returned home he was presented with an IBA Centenary belt by the club in recognition of his achievements.
