The Belfast Beltway Boxing Classic took place in the Titanic Ballroom at the weekend and it proved to be quite a battle as the Americans came on a mission to overturn the defeat from last year.

Prior to ‘fight night’ Team USA came to Ballymoney for a training session at Scorpion Boxing Club, the anchor club for the charity in Northern Ireland.

The boxing event showcased some of the finest young fighters from the province, including Matty Boreland from Churchlands Golden Gloves in Coleraine.

Fighting in the 57kg class, Matty found his opponent Shakell Daley of the Sugar Ray Leonard Club just too much of a handful as the American had the unanimous decision.

The packed ballroom was entertained by some very close contests and it went down to the wire with the Northern Ireland fighters coming out on top five bouts to four.

Alan ‘Spike’ Martin, from Scorpion Boxing Club, who selects the local fighters along with Brendan Lowe commented afterwards: “I am more than happy with the way things went. There was some very good competitive matches and it was a good night of boxing.

“I thought young Matty Boreland from Churchlands did really well. That was the first time he had been in a show as big as that and it was a great experience for him,” added the local boxing coach on the night.
