Magee aims for Danish hat-trick as he gets ready for Kessler

LISBURN boxer Brian Magee will be looking to claim a Danish hat-trick when he faces Mikkel Kessler for the WBA World Super-middleweight title later this year.

Magee will travel to Kessler’s backyard - most likely Copenhagen before a crowd of around 12,000 - in late November or early December after seeing off the threat of Danish fighters Mads Larsen and Rudy Markussen in their homeland.

The Lisburn southpaw stopped both Larsen and Markussen and he is looking to make it a treble against Kessler.

“I am ready for the hat-trick of KO’s. I’ve stopped Larsen, I’ve stopped Markussen and now it’s Kessler’s turn.

“He’s a great fighter, there is no doubt about that, but I have the tools to break him down and beat him.

“He ran from a fight earlier in the year after he was ringside and was witness to the destruction of Markussen.

“But now I have him and he will go the same way.

“I have already commenced early training and I am working on a fight plan with my coach Bernardo Checa.

“Denmark has been good to me and I am happy to be going back.

“This is a huge opportunity for me and I am determined to take it.

“It is every fighter’s dream to win a World title and I am no different,” added Magee.

And Magee’s manager Pat Magee says the Kessler deal was the best one for his fighter.

“Kessler is probable the biggest name in the division.

“He has been in some huge fights in his career and he is a big name.

“We were talking to Kelly Pavlik’s people, Andre Dirrell’s people and Kessler’s team.

“Kessler’s offer was the best and we went for that one. We are not going to Denmark to make up the numbers and we want this fight.

“Brian wanted this fight. He wants to fight on this stage, at this level and we believe he can win the fight.

“Brian has sparred with Kessler in the past and he is up for the challenge that lies ahead.

“When Brian beats Kessler he is then in the driving seat to take part in more huge fights.

“We wanted this fight and we are confident we can get the job done.”

And Dane Kessler (45-2, 34 KOs) wants to put the record straight against Magee and restore some national pride.

“I look forward to fighting Magee,” the Viking Warrior said.

“He’s a good boxer with a lot of heart.

“It takes something to come to Denmark and knock out both Mads and Rudy.

“But his winning streak will end when we meet.

“I am very keen to be world champion again and Magee cannot prevent this from happening.

“I am a proud Dane and this guy will take a beating for having knocked out my countrymen.

“I want to get my hands on the WBA belt and to that I must beat Magee and I am confident of doing that,” added Kessler.

And Kessler’s promoter Kalle Sauerland is looking forward to the clash.

“This will be a massive event, I believe the whole country will get behind Mikkel.

“He can become world champion for a record fourth time and restore the Danish boxing pride by avenging the bitter KOs of Markussen and Larsen.

“Magee will feel the wrath of the Viking Warrior!

“It is really a question of honour and he is representing his country,” he added.
