McAvoy latest All Saints boxer to clinch title success

The venue was at the Corpus Christie College and the All Saints man having to wait to the last bout of the night didn’t disappoint the crowd.

His opponent was Mosa Kambele from the Lisburn boxing club.

Seventeen year old McAvoy, grandson of All Saints legend Tony McAvoy, took to the centre of the ring and kept the Lisburn at bay with long solid shots taking the first two rounds on the judges’ cards.

The relentless Kambele came on very strong in the last round and McAvoy had to dig very deep which he did superbly to take the contest and the County Antrim 64kg Crown.

Saints coach Dermot Hamill said: “Anthony only came into the club a few months ago to simply keep fit.

“He got a buzz for the game and now look where he is.

“He trains very hard and is a pleasure to work with,” added Dermot.

Martin Stokes also won the 42kg class. Martin boxed 3 fights in 3 days to win the title which was exceptionally for a lad of 11 years of age.

Other winners were Ronan Tierney 54kgs, Brendan McDonnell 52ks and John Doherty 80kgs.

Also this weekend another five All Saints boxers enter the Ulster championships. They are Tyler Mcmullan, Tom Stokes, Connor McGhee, Christie Convery and John Doherty.

DONNELLY MIAMI-BOUND

Meanwhile, All Saints boxer Steven Donnelly jetted off to Miami this week for his latest bout in the World Series Boxing championships.

Donnelly travelled along with Irish Elite coach Eddie Bolger to meet up with the rest of his Polish Hussars team-mates in FLorida, ahead of his weekend contest against Brian Ceballo.

“I’ve put the visa mix-up a couple of weeks a go to the back of my mind and I am fully concentrated towards Miami and the Ceballo contest,” said Steven.

“The no1 U.S.A. Welterweight is leading the competition, having won both his fights, but the extra time I’ve had to allow my injured hand to heal is working to my advantage,” added Donnelly, who is aiming to make it two wins from two outings.
